John on the Issues

Keeping Our Nation Safe

John Katko has been one of the foremost leaders in Congress on national security, passing legislation to plug dangerous security gaps at our nation’s airports, disrupt the flow of terrorist fighters into the United States, strengthen our military, and shut down business to foreign drug kingpins.  John believes we need to secure our nation’s borders, including our Northern border, and has supported legislation requiring 100% border security.

As a Freshman member of Congress, John was entrusted to lead a panel examining the threat of foreign fighters traveling into the United States, and proposed comprehensive solutions to stop the threat.  Additionally, Congressman Katko leads a panel in charge of overseeing transportation security.  He has ushered twelve separate security reforms through the House of Representatives, five of which have been signed into law by the President.

John knows that strong national security is vital to a strong economy, a stable world, and a free society. He is committed to working tirelessly to keep our country safe, while respecting and protecting our Constitutional rights.

Working to Create Jobs and Grow the Economy

Central New Yorkers expect their elected leaders to put aside petty differences and fight for policies that create jobs and opportunity.

That’s the philosophy John brought with him to Congress, where he has worked in a bipartisan fashion to pass landmark transportation improvement legislation, supported bipartisan efforts to institute smart, growth-oriented tax policies, and introduced legislation to boost Central New York’s tourism industry.

John broke the partisan mold, and introduced pro-growth legislation to give families the flexibility to take parental leave, and has worked closely with local leaders to fight for the region’s economic priorities.

John believes we need to create an environment where businesses and their employees can prosper.  He has fought for lower taxes, responsible levels of government spending, and reforms to outdated and burdensome regulations.

Partisan gridlock has held economic growth back. Before John came to Congress, funding for our nation’s roads and bridges was in jeopardy, with Congress passing 35 short term funding extensions since 2009. John knows that a solid transportation network is indispensible to a strong economy. John served as a key negotiator of a long-term highway bill, which ended years of funding uncertainty for our nation’s highway programs, and worked for improvements that will make it easier for local governments to work with and benefit from federal highway programs. As one of a small number of Representatives and Senators assigned to negotiate the final highway bill, John worked to draw attention to the importance of the I-81 rebuilding project, and to save Centro from deep budget cuts.

John knows that a strong economy must work for everyone, and give anyone with talent and ambition the chance to succeed. He has supported legislation to boost apprenticeship programs, cut taxes for small businesses, and boost investment in struggling regions.

Empowering Our Teachers and Improving Education

Top-down, Washington-based decision making isn’t working for our schools. John worked to pass legislation to end the federal Common Core mandate so our teachers and parents can tailor education to the needs of individual students.

John has supported legislation to provide states flexibility in student testing, and to bring new, innovative methods into the classroom.

Honoring Our Veterans

John knows that there can be no more solemn commitment than the one our nation makes to its veterans. After serving our country, veterans deserve support services that they can count on.

For that reason, he has fought to reform and improve the VA, open up new educational and job opportunities for returning veterans, and for programs to improve mental health treatment and prevent veteran suicides. John has worked to ensure veterans receive care they are entitled to, and to secure medals for veterans tied up in the federal bureaucracy.

Improving Healthcare

Rising healthcare costs are a huge burden on American families and businesses. John has fought to get rid of onerous taxes on medical devices, health plans, and individuals without health coverage that were imposed by Obamacare. He has pushed Congress to offer a workable alternative, while opposing repeal efforts that aren’t accompanied by an alternative plan.

Additionally, John has been a vocal supporter of efforts to improve medical research and mental health care, and is actively working with local leaders, parents, and grassroots advocacy groups in our community to address gaps in pediatric mental health coverage in Central New York.

Focused on Local Priorities

Representing the interests of Central New York is what voters entrusted John to do, and it’s a duty that he takes seriously.

John has worked to advance local priorities such as the creation of the Harriet Tubman Home National Park, and has led efforts to achieve National Park status for Fort Ontario in Oswego.  John has been an aggressive advocate for the 174th Attack Wing, and has worked hard to keep Central New York’s cutting edge healthcare and education institutions strong.

John knows that different parts of the district have different priorities and needs, and has worked hard to stay in touch with constituents from every part of the district. He has pushed for policies that help the region’s agricultural sector, worked to ensure funding for important anti-poverty and nutrition assistance grant programs, supported improvements to the region’s infrastructure and advocated for the region’s booming tourism industry.

Combating the Drug Epidemic

The synthetic and opioid drug epidemics have taken a heavy toll on Central New York.  John has been one of the most engaged Members of Congress in fighting back against these scourges, sponsoring bipartisan legislation to more easily stop the importation and sale of synthetic drug substances, and to crack down on foreign drug kingpins. With his assistance, Congress has taken significant action to beat back the drug epidemic.

Protecting Medicare and Social Security

Central New York seniors have paid into the Medicare and Social Security systems their entire lives, and they deserve to know that they will receive the benefits they’ve earned. That’s why John believes that no changes can be made to these programs for individuals in our community who are at or near retirement and depend on these programs.

John has worked hard to protect Medicare Advantage from cuts, and to ensure that the system is not changed for anyone receiving benefits.  He has also advocated for a cost of living adjustment for beneficiaries, because these programs must keep up with the rising cost of living.  In Congress, John will continue to advocate for policies that will ensure the continued strength of these programs for current and future beneficiaries.

Energy and the Environment

Our country must continue efforts towards achieving energy independence.  John supports domestic production of energy, as well as investment in research for clean and renewable energy.  He’s fought alongside our local communities to support the nuclear plants in Central New York.

John knows that we must reduce our reliance on foreign oil and expand North American energy production, and supports responsible projects to enhance our national energy security to expand our domestic energy infrastructure.

John recognizes that we need to make sure our nation has a healthy mix of energy sources by utilizing modern extraction methods to increase production of fossil fuels in the most environmentally friend way possible,  while continuing to research and diversify our clean energy options.  He also recognizes that importance  of nuclear energy, which is emissions-free, steady, and a large employer in our region.
